CASCAIS, PORTUGAL-(9-9-2003) Olympic gold medallist Iain Percy and crewman Steve
Mitchell just missed out on the medals at the Star European Championships by
one point finishing fourth overall and second Europeans.
The seventy-one competitors experienced a wide range of conditions during
the week, which reflected in the results. Team GBR sailors Percy and
Mitchell included a first and a second place amongst their score line and
went into the final day in fifth place. After a long wait, racing eventually
got underway at 16 30 and Percy/Mitchell worked their way up the fleet to
finish in sixth place, putting them in front of double European champion and
Olympic medallist Fredrik Loof of Sweden.
After six races, double Olympic medallist Torben Grael, sailing with Marcelo
Ferreira of Brazil, continued his winning streak from the Pre-Olympics, and
won his second regatta in a row from the Dutch pairing of Mark Neeleman and
Peter Van Niekerk who were first Europeans.
The fleet now have a quick turn around as they head down to Cadiz for the
ISAF World Sailing Championships, which forms part of the Olympic Selection
Process for Team GB. The event gets underway this weekend with the Star
class racing commencing on Monday 15 September.
